THE STUDY OF CHINESE.

THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG.

The curriculum of the Faculty of Arts includes five groups of studies:-

Group I. Letters and Philosophy.

Group II.

Experimental Science,

Group III.

Social Science.

Group IV.

Courses for Teachers.

Group V.

Commercial Course.

Section 13 of the University Ordinance requires that in the Arts Faculties due provision shall be made for the study of the Chinese language and literature, but for the last four years Chinese did not appear anywhere in the curriculum of the Arts Faculty, except as a subject in the first and second year course of Group 1, and in the first two years of one of the Teachers' Courses, Chinese now counts as a full subject in the Letters and Philosophy Group of the Arts Faculty curriculum. Arrangements have also been made to enable students who are preparing to be teachers of general subjects (as opposed to teachers of mathematics and science) to make a more intensive study of Chinese. The present staff includes Dr. Lai Chi Hsi and Dr. Au Tai Tin, as whole time Readers of Chinese, Mr. Lum Tung as translation master, and a librarian. Mr. H. R. Wells has kindly given his services to the University for the current year and is acting as general adviser and inter- preter to the Board of the Faculty of Arts in connexion with these advanced Chinese courses. The Chinese section of the University Library has already received many additions, and it is hoped that the friends of the University will come forward
